Continuing with our new Archinect Studio Pin-Ups series, we showcase work from Cal Poly Pomona's Department of Architecture (CPP ARC) First Year Spring Studio. The ARC 1011A Foundation Design Studio is led by Studio Coordinator Robert Alexander (CPP alumn and coordinator of the Department of Architecture's First Year Design Studio) and Associate Coordinator Claudia Wainer (CPP ARC lecturer and Senior Architecture Associate at OWUI).
This course provides students with an "introduction to the process of design through studio projects addressing the role of process in the development of form. Focus on drawing and model construction as a means to seeing and understanding."

Studio Summary: "The Spring studios of the first year of the core curriculum at Cal Poly Pomona typically see students further integrating and building on their knowledge of tectonics, building organization, and analysis that they have begun in the fall while continuing to develop their digital representation and drawing skills. The project for this semester was split into two parts, with the first focusing on the analysis of the campus context, materials, and landscape in and around our College’s Building 7, designed by the Los Angeles architect Carl Maston. The second on designing a small campus building for the college."
"Students used photography and drawings as well as their own research into buildings of similar typologies to propose a new 12,000-square-foot ENV Library/Archives and a design for the plaza adjacent to the existing building. The goal for the studio was for students to begin working with basic conceptual tools of site analysis, to understand elements of landscape design, and to create projects that had a strong relationship to the campus’ existing context and topography."
"It was important at this early stage in students' design education that their proposals integrated lessons learned in previous lectures and courses that dealt with materiality and tectonics and, most importantly, that they were able to demonstrate a clear organizational strategy for the building program and its components."
