To accommodate an anticipated 15% increase in volume over the next 3 years, Northwell Cohen Children's Medical Center sought to create a new pediatric surgery suite in an existing shell space. The new, 37,600SF facility includes 8 pediatric operating rooms, 27 pre- and post-op recovery beds, new intake area, consultation rooms, and support areas. The project is comprised of a 23,000SF fit-out and 14,500SF renovation. The interior design is playful and lively, based on best practices in designing for pediatrics. The space offers pleasant distraction, pops of color, and engagement spaces for patients, accommodating the important role of families in the healing process.
CCMC is the first and only American College of Surgeons Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the NYC Metropolitan Area. The resulting $30M surgical suite was completed in Spring 2022. The project schedule was temporarily put on hold in 2020, when the shell space was rapidly repurposed by E4H and Northwell to serve as an emergency COVID care unit. The surgery center was planned and designed by E4H in an existing shell space as part of the $90M children's health tower.
