Atlantic Hotel Kijkduin

The Atlantic Hotel at the Kijkduin seaside resort, on three sides surrounded by the West Dunes, is famous in the Hague and surroundings. Since 1890 the hotel is located “lonely on the white top of the dunes”. The current hotel is outdated and needs to be renovated. Commissioned by BOHA Hotels, the Atlantic Hotel will be expanded with luxurious free sector apartments and extra hotel rooms while the exisiting building with facilities such as catering and wellness will be fully renovated, both in- and exterior. The functional diversity of the new hotel is captured in its architecture with multi-faceted facades that change the image from every perspective.

A typical representative of the 60’s architecture, the Atlantic has a building structure with a very straightforward connection to the ground level. Utilitarian facilities and car park define the image. We aim to give the new building a plinth that blends with its environment. The restaurant and terraces look out over the sea with open, transparent facades. At the street side public functions with a lively character such as catering and a business lounge make a strong connection with the busier Delta square. The other two sides of the building directly connect with the dunes. By replenishing the dunes around the building, the Atlantic stands with its feet in the dunes, a seamless transition to the Natura 2000 area.

The new Atlantic consists of four distinctive towers, connected with more reserved lower volumes. Main architectural theme is the imagination of the view. Cantileverd balconies give the facades a very expressive look and provide all apartments a stunning view. Masonry in sand-coloured shades naturally fits the location by the sea.

After the renovation the new Atlantic Hotel becomes a beehive that operates virtually 24/7, following the new development plans for this coastal area. The aim is to transform the Kijkduin area to a lively seaside resort that operates year round offering restaurants, shops and small-scale recreation in a slow-traffic oriented area.
