an answer, red, and government benevolence

    better late than never
hello. the other columbia kids have been blogging away, and now it's time to catch up with them...

    one: revision
a fellow blogger greg (hi there) wondered why the first year M.Arch students have a different technology/visual studies sequence. there are partial answers! apparently every few years or so, the faculty come together to reassess what's going on in the school, revising the curriculum as necessary. and after design faculty + several student evaluation comments about the timing/content of the requisite drawing and intro 3d modeling/visualization course, there has been a change. all you alumni who went through the thur-friday days where every first year student stayed up all night trying to meet both drawing and studio deadlines on friday while enduring the obnoxiously loud music coming from the business school's weekly happy hour - consider yourself dated. drawing has moved to 2nd semester, and moving into first semester is the intro computer/visualization course (traditionally a third semester requirement) which is required of all new students.
overall, i think it's a good move. mr. josh uhl and mr. dave fano are teaching the course, and several of my own classmates who did not come from architecture backgrounds have glanced at the syllabus and said "this is exactly what i should have learned in first semester." all you first years, i hope you appreciate the easier semester you're "enjoying" compared to the years before you and the benefits you've inadvertently reaped.

    two: lots of red paint
those of us who traveled to beijing this summer for a china lab workshop created an exhibit of our trip and resultant project in front of the elevator in avery hall. check out our project video (that's playing on the plasma screens) with the link above...

the 400 postcards we made were all taken in a little over one day. but fear not, there will be more of them come oct 20th.

three: it's not $700 billion, but it's pretty darn good
columbia has a penchant for taping flyers/posters to the walls/doors nearby the elevators: lectures, sublets, intramural team signups, and on and on. but the best by far is this flyer that appeared a week or two ago on the doors to the 600 and 700 level studios.

    =) till the next post...

      Hi Sharon,

Yeah, we first years are actually pretty happy that the curriculum changed and we are taking the Architectural Drawing and Representation course now instead of later. You're right that students without an architecture background appreciate it and use it for Studio work.

Rest assured, we are all "enjoying" the business school's thursday night party tunes. I mean it.
