Lethargy has set in. It was near 70 degrees today, and all I wanted to do was be outside with my watercolors. I've been ticking off the days until the semester ends. Assignments are nearing completion: my final paper for contemporary theory is half finished, and a reading review for atmosphere and effects was completed today. There's still—of course—a lot to do.
Everyone else in school seems to be feeling the same spring antsy-ness. Once the semester ends I'm going to Rome for a month to draw with a group of Yale architects, and I just can't wait! I love to leaf through the Pearl Paint catalogue picking out paints and papers. That store is heaven. Hopefully I can go down to New York this weekend and pick up supplies. I have some Japanese watercolors that I bought six years ago on a trip to Taiwan, but they're rather opaque and in unique hues. It's hard to find a portable palette that's small enough for light travel but big enough to hold ten colors. The smallest palettes hold 5, and then the size seems to jump to 20. Alas.
Everyone's summer plans are getting nailed down. A lot of people are going to work abroad and I'm a bit envious. I'll be in NYC this summer, which isn't so bad. The city can be great in the summer since there are so many free outdoor concerts and such going on—and hopefully I'll be able to enjoy them (and not work so late). I don't have a job yet, which makes me nervous. I've been spending time on school work and not on my portfolio. But there's no use in panicking. I'll just do what I can do.
I've been meaning to put some more photos up, and I didn't empty my flash card yet, so those will come soon. I'm in the subbasement of the A&A right now, babysitting the laser cutter. The thing is really tricky. It rarely cuts through anything, but if you push it to it starts a fire. I can't stand having to knife out little bits of wood that were scored but not cut. And that's what I'll spend tonight doing. Such a waste of time!
All for now!

savanna I'm glad you are making use of the natural spring colours by painting them. The only time I saw the Yale campus face to face was during the spring and I was blown away at the natural palette. Anyhow just blogging to add a hint, for travelling purposes those kidding watercolours tend to be very good - because the colours are usually limited to just the primary and secondary colours - as well its good value for money, don't like it chuck it, a colour doesnt seem right bring a tube of one you do. dc
savanna: thanks for the information and posts.......will you be taking the Rome: Continuity and CHange class? I'm considering Yale for my M.Arch II degree thanks in part to your posts!
Do you know about Poggi in Rome? It's in the shadow of the pantheon and they stock a good selection of art supplies.
Hey try water color tubes, you decide which colors you want, squeeze out onto a plastic try and you're good to go. Get a tray with a cover, so when the colors dry out, you can re-use them just by re-wetting. Just the way you would with store-bought color trays.
