The concept is to create the idea of mouvement and exchange that usually there is in a normal train station. These volumes are like two trains that are going in opposite directions giving the idea of speed. The competition was to project a “music area” in Manhattan, the New york Theater City.
Area is divided in three parts as the urban plan of Manhattan where there are about 70 meters between the streets and about 210 meters between tha avenue. In the middle of the area there are these two volumes and around a public park. There are many rooms dedicated about music function where the main space are the auditorium, For the structure the goal was to to check the feasibility of the project in view of the great lights (25 m) by calculating the principal beams. From these calculations, it was possible to meet the initial idea for the main structure using steel beams 814 mm HSE double welding. There are 22 spans with a distance of 8 m about which give a total length of 160 m.
The design of the beams is particular and does not follow the classic form of a gallery for have a different shape more harmonic and to create particular reflections on prospects. These two buildings are links with a glass-steel roof where there are the mains entrances.
The coverage is an important point to link the project and ends in the basement where there is a restaurant that is the element of union in the underground of the two buildings. This place is a pedestrian and public space where the people can walk The main rooms have been inserted into the body to the south and secondary to the north.
Main spaces are four auditorium of 700, 400, 350 and 150 people and the rehearsal rooms for musicians. There are 7500 meters square of photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity.
With a panel of 195W with an area cornice of 1.28 meter square there are about 5800 units covering the all roof that produces per year about 1400 MWh. Taking into account that each MWh is sold at $ 360 it has a revenue of about $ 500,000 per year.
