An abandoned electric utility site is producing "renewable energy" in the form of a PK - Grade 5 magnet school devoted to literacy in STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering and math. Discovery Academy, operated by the Capital Regional Educational Council, opened in Wethersfield, CT in September 2015, in a facility that creates learning opportunities inside and out. Amenta Emma designers salvaged 48,000 sf of an existing building and created a 19,000 sf addition to accommodate learning spaces, labs, and a multipurpose gymnasium/theater/cafeteria. The facility takes full advantage of natural light and emphasizes indoor-outdoor connections, aligned with the school's STEM theme.
