Completion: 2016 - summer
PLAYDIUM combines the fundamentals of a stadium and playground, to create an adaptable play space, surrounding a football pitch. It is situated in Lodtundu, Bali, which is a 15 minute drive South of Ubud.
Playdium sits within the local school's grounds and is placed adjacent to their library and classrooms. The playground forms an 'L'-shape which surrounds a football pitch, with the two school buildings lining the other two sides. The space features a spiral staircase, rope swings, hammocks, football net and a 'relaxing' area, should the children desire more quiet time. PLAYDIUM's structure and finishes are made entirely from bamboo, a local and highly renewable material. Each beam and column are secured in place with hand made dowels, trimmed from split pieces of bamboo, and are joined together using palm string to give it an added element of durability. When constructing in bamboo, every single piece must be treated with insecticide: a meticulous process which is very time consuming but necessary to ensure the material will last as long as possible.
