The Lilly Library, at the heart of Indiana University’s Bloomington campus, is home to significant rare-book collections and literary artifacts including 450,000 rare books and 8.5 million manuscripts. For its 60th anniversary, a $12.4 million renovation was undertaken from 2019 to 2021 to modernize the spaces and to create new furniture and display casework. As a firm with architectural and art display expertise, TSKP x ikd was chosen out of a competitive RFP process to design the two main public reception areas that include the lobby and Lincoln Room. Table cases with integrated lighting were created to allow objects of various sizes to be displayed, and the wall cases were enlarged to hold seamless 10ft wide glass doors. All display furniture was made to be easily reconfigurable for exhibitions, and easily movable to allow for special events in the space. Visual motifs from the exterior of the building were incorporated into the casework design, new reception desks, seating design, as well as the custom wallcovering produced for the Lincoln room.
