Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence was an exhibition consisting of over 350 diverse objects that included Japanese prints and European, modern, and contemporary art. The design solution addressed the increasing concerns within our practice of minimizing waste resulting from temporary art exhibitions while simultaneously creating dynamic and memorable spaces that elevate the curatorial narrative. The exhibition presents artwork that both influenced and was inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. We saw Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa as a powerful metaphor for inspiration and influence in art. Art does not occur in a vacuum but rather is part of a continuum of ideas, visual motifs, and creative energy. In the gallery, a series of overlapping rectangles form a pixellated wave beginning in light blue, gradually cresting to a saturated dark blue, then receding to return to a light blue in the last gallery. The overlaps are used to highlight objects where Hokusai’s influence is particularly poignant. Overlaps were also used for didactics, creating areas for the explanatory text in each section.
