Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance Offices

The Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance (MAHA) is a non-profit organization that promotes public and private investment in affordable housing and educates and equips first-time homebuyers. Studio G Architects designed an environmentally sustainable building to house MAHA’s administrative offices, classrooms, and meeting spaces.

The design incorporates a broad range of environmentally sensitive systems and strategies, from its siting to the materials' details. Oriented to maximize its passive solar potential and to support a 12kW photovoltaic array, the building’s open layout allows for cross-ventilation, while north-facing clerestory windows introduce ample natural light. Low- or no-VOC emitting materials were utilized wherever possible to promote a healthy work environment, and low-flow plumbing fixtures, energy-efficient lighting, and mechanical systems encourage responsible use of natural resources. The project was designed using LEED criteria, and its proximity to two subway stops sets an example of transit-oriented development in an up-and-coming neighborhood.

Green building for offices, classrooms, and meeting spaces incorporates a range of green design strategies. Oriented to maximize its passive solar potential and support a 12kW photovoltaic array, the open layout offers cross-ventilation; north-facing clerestory diffuses daylight throughout. Low/no-VOC materials promote a healthy work environment; low-flow plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient systems conserve resources. Designed to meet LEED certification, approved by Energy Star as Labeled Building.
