SCAR CITY /SCARCITY

degree project for Scripted Ecologies studio partner Dariusz Kulinski critics Richard Sarrach and Cathryn Dwyre

This defunct mining site is located in a mountain pass between California and Nevada. It found value through the
financial profit on the sale of rare element oxides. Instead of turning a blind eye, Scar City turns towards the disturbed
landscape, offering a new reading of the mining site. The mine reveals a remnant of history. Its stratified layers tell the story
of eons of geologic flux. Simultaneously, the traces of the industrial-scale tools are visible, a demonstration of human
impact. The program of Scar City is a play on the process of mining, by reverse-mining, filling the open mine with a new
source of embedded value. This value is based in knowledge. The data is gathered from the cosmos, reaching light years
into the past. The vastness of the universe provides that there is endless information to be gathered. The archive sorts and
stores the data, allowing it to be mined by researchers seeking new knowledge.
