This house renovation was for an established married couple, both of whom are involved in the arts. He writes music for the Steppenwolf Theatre and she is an independent accessories and jewelry designer. They both enjoy cooking, baking, and hosting parties at their home for their friends and colleagues.
When conceptualizing the renovation, I decided that
preserving the integrity of this 100 year old home was just as important as capturing the new owners lifestyle.
I designed the interior space of this home as if I were
designing a salon in Paris. The owners required a space where they can host their friends; a space that allows easy access to each room. The sitting room being a formal gathering of people when first entering the home. The kitchen and dining room- the heart of any home, where aromas of great food are wafting through the room and where views of the lake can be discovered from the bay windows. In the family room, cocktails and wine are being poured from the bar, where there is a buildup of mahogany wood, that holds endless amounts of books and tokens of travel. A piano sits in the room, where no doubt the host will introduce his new piece of music for his closest friends to hear.
When the night is over, a tucked away staircase leads
the couple up to their private master suite. A
balcony just outside their bedroom invites them to look out over the lake.
