When complete, the newly designed, 18,400-square-foot space will provide an exceptional healing environment capable of accommodating the physical, biological, psychiatric, psychological and social needs of adolescents and adults coping with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. The unit will expand from 14 to 20 beds, with private rooms and separate areas for adolescents and adults.

Patient care areas are carefully designed to allow for a variety of needs from active to quiet, with open space and private space. Open areas with natural light, soft lines and nature themes will offer comfortable environments in which to rejuvenate, relax and create a sense of normalcy.

Classrooms, open congregation areas, flexible treatment spaces and a shared clinical core for RWJUH Somerset’s multidisciplinary team of clinicians and staff have been carefully planned to help the RWJUH team to maximize efficiencies. The use of the latest research and evidence-based design principles balances the critical requirements of safety and security while simultaneously promoting healing and wellness.

Wall Breaking: Somerset Health Care Foundation held a Demolition Ceremony to ceremonially kick off the renovations for the Eating Disorders Unit. The $9 million renovation features separate areas for adults and adolescents. Donors and supporters had the opportunity to knock a hole in one of the unit’s walls to start the demolition. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.

The RWJUH EDU program has gained national recognition for increasing the awareness of eating disorders. In 1999, the staff participated in the White House Mental Health Conference. Since then, the program has been highlighted on nationally televised programs, including NBC's Later Today and CBS' 48 Hours, and others.
