Little Ply

The studio began with the construction of buoyant vessels which floated at Gallagher Beach and raced as part of an annual regatta. Each studio was divided into three teams that would focus on different legs of the race being maneuverability, speed, and weight capacity. As an instrument, buoyant vessels are ideal objects from which to investigate many fundamental questions that pertain to the tectonics of architecture, space, geometry, structure, skin, form, function, material, and construction. My group decided to focus on developing the skin of our vessel creating a complex system of plywood sheets cut to precision by CNC machine. The system consisted of mitered joints that would bring the plywood sheets together with the level of precision needed to ensure the vessel didn’t experience any leakage. This allowed for the group to have a unique skin with minimal structure while ensuring the boat would be suited well for maneuverability.
