Students were given a space to start from and use concepts from. Studio X was assigned the ritual of rest and repose and tasked to reshape the space around this ritual. The original space featured a runner that is pushed through holes in the verticals. These were used to form the exterior walls as the horizontals are used to create space. The designed space began to incorporate ideas of elevating the body off the ground and offering a sense of openness while offering enclosure with the verticals. In the early stages, we began researching and testing different ways the system could be changed and manipulated to enhance the ritual. We chose to move forward with this style of system because of its versatility and ability to be manipulated in any way we wanted. The other strength of this design is the density of verticals creating a vertical glare effect. This density allowed for the space to feel enclosed enveloping the body while it enters a state of rest.
