McRobie, a mathematician with a deep knowledge of the visual arts and the human body’s curves wrote a startlingly original book. The Seduction of Curves is a probing exploration of the parallels between nature and the constructed world. This moment of a curve where it is pushed to the point of catastrophe, on the verge of breaking is what we sought to achieve in this built project. The prompt for this project was to construct a lauf machine or running machine. Using the methodologies of McRobie the group designed a lauf machine that would use three pieces of wood bent to the point of catastrophe and brought together to create a unique frame. The bending of these members was achieved by constructing a steam box that would allow strips of wood to be bent into harsh curves. These curved wood pieces were bolted together at the intersections and supported by welded steel handlebars and rear chainstays. This form allowed for a spring-like bounce on the bike due to the wood bending to the weight of the rider. The unique form and design of our machine achieved the award for the best design project in the competition.
