About

A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where he received his Master of Architecture, Fant received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for graduate architecture, a recognition that honors an outstanding student for studio work and academic leadership; he was also a recipient of the Christner Inc. Endowed Scholarship.

In 2011 Fant was the member of a design-winning digital fabrication team in St. Louis. The team’s “Saltworks,” a 20-by-3-foot helix-shaped structure, was constructed and installed outside the Kemper Museum of Art. A twisted form made of baltic birch, Saltworks features polypropylene nesting space made to mimic salt weathering rock. Depressions in the reticulated form create opportunities for public use. The sculpture was recognized by Archinect, Evolo, Archello, SuckerPunchDaily, and +Mood design and architecture blogs for its innovative revelation of design as an interactive, practical, technical, and artistic enterprise.

Prior to graduate school, Fant interned in New Orleans at Brian Gille Architects Ltd, where he worked with a design team to rebuild the Community Church Unitarian Universalist to replace the former building, which was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Fant also worked on restoring historic residences throughout the city, including the celebrated French Quarter.

During his undergraduate study at Clemson University’s architecture program, Fant spent a semester at the Charles E. Daniel Center for Architecture and Urban Studies in Genoa, Italy. Later, while completing his graduate studies, he also worked as a studio teacher and program coordinator with The Alberti Program-Architecture for Young People, a St. Louis project focused on at-risk high school youth interested in architecture, engineering, and the sciences. In 2011, Fant returned to St. Louis as an invited Alberti lecturer on his photography exhibit, “Genoa, Through Light and Shadow.” He received the Rudolph E. Lee Award for undergraduate architecture.

Awards

Alpha Rho Chi Medal for Graduate Architecture, Award

Alpha Rho Chi, a national social fraternity in architecture, awards a medal to the graduating sixth-year student who has shown ability for leadership, has performed willing service for the school, and has given promise of real professional merit.

Since 1931, the Bronze Alpha Rho Chi Medal has recognized graduating architecture students for their leadership and service and what they offer the future of the profession. Alpha Rho Chi believes strong leaders are just as essential as strong designers. The award was established to recognize qualities not necessarily pertaining to studio and scholarship.
