Pixelated Generations

In order to rejuvenate the neighborhood of the east river front and give it a new identity, the proposal will look into ways of attracting multi-generations residents in finding their homes. The idea of having multi-generation is to create a diverse community that has the potential to grow and influence the city in general.

Strong communities are built over a long period of time. Attracting youngsters to settle down in urban areas would create a strong community over time. Besides, having an older generation in the community would bring more insight into developing the neighborhood.

Young professionals have always struggled with finding affordable housing that they could own in urban areas. Often we see young generations moving out of the city in order to find a house that has the potential to be their permanent “home”.

The site has the opportunity to bring density to the neighborhood gradually. Density in the sense of mid-rise buildings rather than highrise that would overwhelm the neighborhood, and diminish the value of the historical buildings. The proposal will also explore the idea of integrating the preserved buildings into the development, in order to educate the residents about the history of the neighborhood.

In general, the idea of the project is to use “Density” and “Diversity” to create “Domesticity”. Imagining the home of individuals being in a diverse urban context rather than a suburban one.

(DNA) is designed to rejuvenate the East Riverfront neighborhood of Detroit and give it a unique identity by providing homes for a diverse, multi-generation community.

As young professionals have always struggled in finding affordable housing in urban areas; the notion of (DNA) is to attract youngsters to settle down in a new form of the urban fabric that creates a diverse and strong community.

The typologies of the units range from a single bedroom with communal living units to four-bedroom units, in order to meet the needs of multi-generation inhabitants.

The site is located at the intersection of E Grand blvd and E Jefferson ave.  It has the opportunity to bring a gradual density to the neighborhood; in the sense of mid-rise buildings rather than highrises that overwhelm the neighborhood, and diminish the value of the historical context.

The concept of the project is to use “Density” and “Diversity” to create “Domesticity”. Imagining the home of individuals being in a diverse, multi-generation urban context rather than a suburban one.
