The New River runs through the middle of Fort Lauderdale’s Central Business District. A decision was made in 1986 to redevelop the river corridor.
Anchoring the West End of the new riverwalk is a new Broward County Performing Arts Center.
Along the river are businesses, a new Discovery Center, parks, new high-rise residential towers and restaurants. Mr. Phillips completed these designs while at EDSA in 1989.
A water taxi business connects the riverwalk attractions to the intercoastal waterway and the beach hotels.
Our scope included designing the riverwalk connections to various attractions along the river. Walks, pavilions, plazas were designed to enhance the restoration of native vegetation along the fresh, sometimes brackish, waters of the New River. Pedestrian lighting, benches and other site furniture was designed to create a theme for the riverwalk.
