NASA SOFIA Mirror Coating Facility

Development One, Inc. was selected to build a mirror stripping and coating facility for NASA’s SOFIA project. NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is an airborne observatory that studies the universe in the infrared spectrum.

The project was a single-story fire-rated metal building on a metal frame, anchored to the existing hangar slab. Development One also constructed a mechanical room and an exit corridor connecting the facility to the outside of the hangar. The project area is 4,695 square feet.

The mirror coating room has a 5-ton capacity three-axis bridge crane. with slow motion controls in all three axes. The coating room is a low-level clean room facility containing customized equipment with spe-cialized power and mechanical interface requirements.
