The packed tower aeration system was designed for 2,400 gpm, which is the District’s maximum pumping rate for these combined wells. The system consists of two packed towers in series, a concrete clearwell below each tower, one centrifugal blower and two vertical turbine pumps per tower to deliver treated water from the first clearwell into the second tower and from the second tower into the distribution system. The building is simple to erect and construct. It is designed with a metal roof and brick infill walls oriented around a Corten steel structure. A cast-in-place foundation with a rectangular steel frame on top of which will be placed the curved trusses to make the roof structure. The material palette is simple but creatively used.
