Christopher Columbus High School (X415) serves grades 9-12 and special education. The original building was completed in 1939. This project entails converting a series of offices, art room and computer lab into a school-based health clinic.
The proposed school based health clinic is to be located on the second floor at Rooms 228A, 228B, 230, 230A, 230B, 230C, 232 and 290. The existing use for each of these spaces and plan to relocate the function if needed is as follows:
- Room 228A “Cisco Lab” at one point was used as a computer lab and workshop. It housed equipment such as computers, drill press, laser cutters, 3D printer and an engraver. Only computers and a few tables remain. All workshop equipment has been relocated. There is no need to relocate the function of this space since it is no longer used for its intended purpose.
- Room 228B “Art Room” is functioning fully as an art room. There are computers, art tables, storage and sinks that will all have to be removed and relocated for the proposed health clinic. This Art Room is used by all schools housed within the building and it is important to provide an alternate permanent space for it during and after construction of the health clinic.
- Rooms 230, 230A, 230B and 230C are a suite of offices. Room 230 “Administration Office” no longer serves this purpose. It is lightly used with two desks with computers against the perimeter of the space. The three “Guidance Offices” (230A, 230B and 230C) are also not used as their intended purpose. The function of this space will not have to be relocated.
- Room 232 “Admin/Guidance Suite” is being used as a guidance office. There is a small waiting area at the entrance, an open office at the back of the space at the ramp and an enclosed office. The function of this space will have to be relocated since this space will be used entirely for the Nurse’s Area and Lab within the proposed health clinic.
- Room 226 “Admin/Guidance Suite” isn’t used as frequently as the guidance office in Room 232. There is an open office at the back of the space at the ramp and an enclosed office to the left of the entrance. Only the portion directly adjacent to the existing Art Room will be used for the proposed health clinic as a mechanical room.
The above spaces will be converted to become 5 exam rooms, 3 council rooms, nurse’s area with labs, mental health education office, dental room with a dental lab, reception area, waiting area, storage, kitchenette, bathroom and a mechanical room.
This project is unique in the fact that all MEP systems designed will have to run independently from those systems that currently supply the building in which the health clinic is in.
The total square footage of the health clinic will be 2004 square feet. The construction cost is $1,405,240. The design start date was 03/25/2013 and this new school-based health clinic will be constructed in the summer of 2014
