Disability Justice is Social Justice Studio/Good Design for Social Good -- This interior design studio project explores the design of a Coffee Shop/Social Justice Center as a third-place environment on the BC campus focusing on the design of the physical space for diverse users. The project will be based on evidence-based design that responds to both historical precedent and current trends in the design of spaces for diverse successful communities through the design of the built environment as a sustainable and successful place that promotes inclusion through wellbeing; a sense of belonging and positive identity; and an understanding the social dimensions of place as an agent of change.
This course has been designed with Bellevue College’s Research Innovation Service Experiential Learning Institute (RISE) in a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) Summer Cohort, “Civic Action in the Classroom” as a Service-Learning Course with a focus on social justice in the built environment.
The RISE Learning Institute works across Bellevue College and with the surrounding community to provide opportunities for students to learn through experiences, with the goal of helping them identity, articulate, build, and apply strengths. Through experiential learning, students develop skills that can help them succeed after leaving Bellevue College. (BC website)
This project includes a Civic Action as defined by the Bellevue College RISE Learning Institute in a student presentation to the BC community.
