Working in collaboration with Design Signature Architects, we were asked to design a ‘strip mall’ in the rural community of Sephaku, in Limpopo. After visiting the site, it was clear that due to the context, site conditions and budgetary constraints, the ‘standard strip mall’ wasn’t at all appropriate nor was it feasible. A decision was taken to conceptually approach the scheme as a ‘Shopping Village’ creating a porous, human scale streetscape. This allows for a range of social, civic, retail and commercial opportunities to emerge and work together.
