Shalom Baranes Associates, Washington DC, Architectural Designer

At Shalom Baranes I worked on the Apex project in Bethesda MD. This project consists of an office and residential tower connected by a podium which houses retail and access to the new Purple Line Metro station. Here I contributed to the exterior glazing design and selection of the office building as well as design and detailing of the lobby and penthouse spaces including fixture and material selection. I also worked on a residential building to be constructed at 1000 S. Capitol St. My chief focus is on CD drawings for the unit interiors as well as consultant coordination and some exterior detailing.

At William McDonough + Partners I am currently working extensively on a confidential high end residential project as well as multiple competitions. I have also worked on the design of a high end Eco-Resort prototype, as well as multiple office and factory projects featuring sustainable concepts and Cradle to Cradle certified™ materials. In addition I am working closely with William McDonough on the continuing development of WonderFrame™, a versatile modular system design for quick and strong construction to be used in disaster relief, inexpensive construction and a variety of other facets. This system consists of two distinct flat packable members that can be combined to create walls, roofs and floor. The system made its debut in 2016 at at the 2016 World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in
Davos as a special meeting space called the ICEhouse™.

Instrumental on all project phases. Project Manager high end residential renovation/addition projects. Project designer through CA on DC Prep Benning Public Charter School. Contributing designer on multiple phases of the current Rocketship Public Charter School project as well as Paul PCS and Hyde- Addison Elementary in Georgetown. Working closely with the firm Principals on multiple residential projects in Washington. Managing LEED certification for DC Prep, Paul PCS and Rabaut PCS as well as other Charter Schools. Designing and coordination of signage elements between client and graphic designer when required. Reception desk design.

Involved with all design, production and construction phases. Instrumental to the design, development and detailing of the new Allen & Overy law offices in Washington DC. One of the two person team that designed and administrated construction - from initial phases through the 2012 completion - of the Vornado Headquarters interior remodel in Crystal City. A major contributor to design and production of projects at City Center in DC and with design and construction administration for Brookfield offices in NYC. Was brought in on other teams in multiple design charettes, as well as with furniture selection, and issuance efforts across the office.

Worked on all phases of the design process. Including a remodel for the Columbia College of Hollywood as well as two private residences. Was instrumental in the selection and organization of competition entries. Primarily designed multiple competition entries, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City, Mine The Gap competition in Chicago and the Tokyo Fashion Museum. Also aided in the design, fabrication and assembly of the BlowXBlow installation at SCI Arc and The Pacific Design Center’s Paul Young Gallery, including the creation of plans and models to coincide with the overall display.

Worked as a design intern on a variety of competition projects producing plans, sections, and renderings, and video as well as contributing first hand to the project design. The competitions I worked on included: Huaxi Urban Centre Tower Guiyang, 2008; Sundsvall Performing Arts Theater Sundsvall, 2008; Emerald Plaza UAE,2008.

Researched possible new product vendors and arranged for informative office presentations. Responsibilities also encompassed assisting in Photoshop productions and printing applications as well as providing general administrative support.

Selected for this program along with only nine other SCI-Arc students. This program, funded by the Austrian government, was a three day intensive workshop in Gunther Domenig’s Steinhaus, Steindorf/Austria, followed by a presentation at the MAK Center in Vienna.
