CCM - Clinton Ave Clinic

Over the past 30 years CCM has helped over 100,000 New Yorkers obtain culturally sensitive mental health treatment by addressing the root causes associated with mental illness and substance abuse through a series of non-profit clinics in NYC’s most impoverished minority populated areas

This recently completed 5,600sf mental health clinic provides social support services to at-risk families in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood.  CCM’s methodology creates a network of support that promotes healthy, stable, and enriched lives for their clients and the communities they serve - our design fosters these ideals by creating a safe and calming place for these treatments to occur.

The clinic is designed to house two different programs - a licensed outpatient mental health and substance abuse clinic with 8 treatment rooms; and a Preventative Services program for youth and families with 10 offices. Because these two programs are required by State law to be separated, we created a central core running between, where staff can come together for meetings, or take a break. This core is designed to celebrate CCM’s mission, purpose and process by using company colors and key words from their mission statement & therapeutic methodology to further distinguish the space. Visitors must pass this core to access each program, providing an additional opportunity for clients to engage with CCM’s vision and mission.

As the first tenant of this space, it was raw and open with dozens of exposed concrete columns, slabs and shearwalls. We embraced the texture and character of these existing conditions by creating opportunities to incorporate exposed concrete ceilings and walls into the design. To keep costs down, we used simple materials and furnishings throughout, but spent considerable time on developing an affordable finish palette and lighting design to create the desired warm and calming environment.

The clinic has been well received by the community and staff.  Our client is thrilled the project exceeded expectations of a limited budget while creating the calm, inclusive and safe environment they were seeking.  As testament to this, our firm has been engaged to design additional clinics incorporating the same design concepts, finishes and lighting.
