Trans-For-More: the Multi-modal Transportation Hub

Following an annual mobility study from Texas A&M, Los Angeles residents can anticipate 8 rush hours of congestion per day.  The average commuter in LA spends 61 hours per year stuck in traffic which equals more than the average workweek.  In addition to the time consumption individual vehicles releases about 19 lbs of carbon dioxide per gallon of gas.  This is the number 1 polluter in the United States.  It appears that driving a private car may not be as convenient and efficient as what we believe.  So why not change our life style and mode of transportation to relieve the planet?

The typical time spent traveling in Los Angeles is 1.37 hours each day.  This time could be well utilized in other ways when using public transportation.  We could read, eat, chat with friends, study or make last minute edits to work.

The Multi-modal Transportation Hub is programmed as a mediator for people switching different types of transportation: from Metro to bus, to individual vehicle, bicycle or to continue of foot.  This unique typology offers an opportunity to address currently under-developed properties around the Los Angeles metro area.   Out of 12 selected sites centered around a 5 mile bicycling radius, one site-next to the Chinatown Gold line metro station- is chosen for further development.

Integration of transportation types provides the complexity of design standard to the architecture such as turning radii, width of lane, slope of ramp, speed of travel and dimension of parking space.  Following the nature of these standards, with the adjustment between the maximum and minimum and site condition, the architecture evokes.

Furthermore Info:

As the population grows and urbanism expands, transportation is always an issue to urban cities in  all countries.  A functional and convenient transportation strategy is urgently needed to be developed to transform the transport-style of urban living residents.  This project is to develop a transit center to reduce the waste of public transportation and control the private transportation usage which the main cause of traffic is, as well as protecting the environment in multiple ways.  The challenges of this project is to use those dumped sites and turn them into functional transit center and design one project to be able to sit on all sites with minor changes.  The outcome of this project will largely impact the urban living style, not only in the United States but all countries like China, Japan, and European countries with high number of population.
