      Hi, Daniel
I am a first year student at USC. I've been lurking on your blog for a while. I am very glad to know that we have at least one very insightful writer/thinker among a large group of "ordinary" students (in comparision to Cornell, Cooper and Rice).

Are you the one who got recognized for your excellence in last year's arch history class? Hopefully, I will see you on campus someday. Fight on!

Haha, yeah, that was me. History = all I'm actually good at. Good luck in first year! Almost all the instructors are new, so I can't give much advice.

FW, I think once you're there longer and see the talent start to be developed, you'll realize there's a bit less 'ordinary' than you think there. There are quite a lot of kids that come to SC having gotten in to some of the schools you mention, but that have been swayed by large scholarship offers. Or sunshine.

Daniel, when are the exhibits from the abroad programs going up? I'm really interested to see the project from the Malaysia program in particular, so if it's not soon then I'm going to have to demand photo documentation!

The work from all three study abroad programs (France, Italy, and Asia) are going up Monday, October 29 to Friday, November 9 in Verle Annis and Lindhurst.

This year's lectures are unexciting in comparision to last year's. No major starchitects except the landscape one and I am not into it. Well, I have no choice, attendence is mandatory.

Daniel, do you know how many people can get into top graduate programs? I feel most of my classmates are not passionate about architecture. Anyway, like rationalist said, talent can be developed.

yeah Daniel, I'm going to have to extract a promise of photos from you on that one since I'll be gone by then!

The fact is that most people coming out of the B.Arch program at SC don't apply for a masters. They don't feel that they need it. Of those who do apply for a masters, they tend to be the best students and reach for the top, and most take some time off to work first. From the handful of people that I know of starting grad school this fall from undergrad at SC, they're at Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley, and some random arts program at UW. ; ) I think the stats would skew towards the top programs, but in large part because it is a self selecting candidate pool and those that wouldn't get into the best schools don't bother.

oh, and I just realized the other reason that I feel like people become less 'ordinary' over time: those who aren't that into it will drop out.
