the addition of a black box theater and gallery space
to the University of Virginia’s Bayly Art Museum | fall 2010 | Peter Waldman
my initial response to this project was to expose the existing steel structure of the brick clad museum, extruding the beams out to fold over and frame a new intervention. this move and the first cut into the hillside against the existing plane of the museum sparked an interest in the juxtaposition between light, glass, and frames against the original building’s heavy brick masonry.
