Matryoshka[n].Market is an urban market proposal for a derelict site in Casablanca, Morocco. The design integrates every aspect of an outdoor open air market, inside an efficient and environmentally-friendly-constructed structure. Built from one of Morocco's most available materials, concrete, the market requires very little cost for construction. The formwork for this design can be used and re-used for essentially the entire structure. Because the entire building is constructed using only 6 different modules (which connect directly into one another), there are only 6 variations of the form and formwork. Once the concrete has been poured, the formwork is removed and designed to be used as market stands, storage bins, waste cans, or any other container or bin necessary within a market.
The form creates a hybrid-transitional space between the street and inner cafe-market. Being located on the outer edge of the site, the market is connected closer to the outside resulting in direct access to fresh air and light. This location allows people to have the most readily available access into the market space. As one moves deeper towards the center, the spaces gradually become darker and more intimate. The cafe has a sense of privacy to it which allows people to experience the building without being completely immersed within the market traffic. The openings through the walls frame views for those eating to watch the market in action.
From the exterior, the market has an especially unique quality. The precisely designed placement of the walls creates a moiré pattern from the exterior giving the viewer the the illusion that the facade is wiggling or moving. An attribute that is likely to attract both tourist and local citizens.
This design opposes the traditional temporary and single use attributes of market places throughout the world. The matryoshka[n].market is a permanent, iconic market structure which creates a communal gathering spot and ultimately revitalizing this district of Casablanca.
