Redefining the Interstitial

First and foremost, my project attempts to accommodate for the individuals that are hesitant to join a facility due to the notion of being forced into a lifestyle reformation imposed by curfew, rules, and regulations. The design sets up a balance between both formal and informal habitation spaces. The build-up of artificial landscape pulls the street-scape up into the project to create an open space with exposed platforms and structure perfect for setting up tents and hammocks. This provides a safe area for people who don’t have the desire to admit to the facility, but still need require the basic human need of shelter. These interstitial spaces reoccur on the 3rd floor terrace and the rooftop. These spaces are intentionally underdefined; allowing the inhabitants to bring their own personality and character to the space- attempting to break down the “statistic mentality” though an encouraged authorship of space. These spaces also make it easy to remain within a community of friends and family.

The use of vibrant color in the design is meant as a sort of stand-in for what the space could potentially be. While homeless housing needs to be affordable construction from an ecenomic standpoint, there are very easy and affordable ways to allow the various communities to bring their own character to the building, creating a positive and optimistic atmosphere. Bringing systems such as open air ventilation, ample showers and bathrooms, access to food and kitchens, rooftop produce garden, and on-site medical facilities and pharmacy are just the first steps towards creating a new typology of rehabilitation facility; one that puts the occupants first.
