Metabolic Studio Metabolic Studio Employer:
Los Angeles, CA, USLocation:

The Metabolic Studio is led by artist Lauren Bon. Derived from the Greek word for change, "metabolism” is the process that maintains life. In continuous cycles of creation and destruction, metabolism transforms nutrients into energy and matter. Lauren Bon’s studio practice includes a team of individuals that work together across a range of investigative platforms, transforming resources into energy, actions and outcomes.

Ms. Bon is trained as an architect and is a practicing visual artist. Her Metabolic Studio creates "devices of wonder" that are specific to sites; interrogating land and water use and positing new modalities in thinking and behavior. The Inter-Mountain West, stretching from the Rockies to the Sierra Nevada is a terrain formed by the forces of water and fire over glacial time. It is our shared watershed that is the focus of the geographic scope of the Metabolic Studio’s work.

We are currently seeking a licensed architect with a minimum of 6 years of experience to assist in design work related to the Metabolic Studio’s signature project Bending the River Back into the City. The project is a three-part metabolic sculpture. A dam will sit in the LA River and connect to a diversion canal, bending the water back into the city via a waterwheel, named LA Noria, in reference to the waterwheels operating on and around the site in the 19th century. Once brought up, the water will become part of a distribution network, The Delta of Mount Whitney. The Delta will deliver water to individuals, organizations, and institutions in the city’s first water commons, to allow the currency of water to create social capital. The waterwheel will be embedded in the Metabolic Studio building, which is being transformed to receive the water.

The ideal candidate should:

  1. Possess a license to practice architecture in the state of California.
  2. Have minimum 6 years experience working in a fast-paced and creative environment.
  3. Be a highly flexible and collaborative designer, able to work closely with Lauren Bon to understand, develop, and execute her design concepts, and able to effectively communicate those concepts to project engineers.
  4. Be proactive, highly organized, and exhibit a high level of craft in both drawings and models.
  5. Have experience managing a team of designers.
  6. Be able to coordinate with consultants and contractors.
  7. Have expertise in Rhino, Autocad, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  8. Have a positive attitude and passion for quality design work.
  9. Experience with sustainable systems is highly preferred.

Salary is commensurate with skills and experience. This is a full-time position.
