Since 2009, I have been significantly involved in a prototype school project for South Sudan. Or organization is founded by a Lost Boy of South Sudan and we are working with the community to build the only permanent structure within 7 miles, and likely the only flood-resistant building in the region. It will serve as a community hub as well as a safe place for learning. Eight large, well lit and ventilated classrooms will accommodate up to 640 students in two sessions. A computer center, located at the school entrance, will connect Jalle to the rest of the world and, perhaps equally important, function as an incentive for students to come to school regularly.
Original design sketches and current rendering are included. More images, graphics, and ventilation diagrams to follow.
"I have worked with many architects over the years, some just starting out, and a few at the top of their careers. Few if any have matched Ms. Kurtz's unique combination of drive, talent, humility and global perspective. She seems to embrace design as a natural extension of the human condition, not simply a means to an end, and by no means an edifice to ego. When leading, she is adept, flexible, intuitive and goal oriented. When following, she is teaching, guiding, nudging, mentoring, and learning. In other words, she is a leader of the highest caliber. Her passion for design and the depth of her compassion for people continue to be a source of inspiration for myself and our entire team."
