If he was mistaking it for Islam then he would have said that he had been to 54 states. So bofore you start defending him just cause he's black get your shit straight. If we have a president whos mistaking America for Islam then our Country is obviously going down hill. Only reason he made that mistake is cause he's a nigger. NOBAMA

Look. This thread is crazy. But I think its endemic of something going on in this country that is actually much, much worse. The above article cites a recent poll showing only 42 percent of americans believe Barack Obama was definitely born in the US. I dont think Beta was being very productive posting that photo, but do you see what we are reacting to? We are rapidly watching our country transforming itself, not just into camps of people who disagree on this or that or feel strongly about politics, but a country wherein more than half of the country now believes in things that are not real. We have mainstream candidates and prime-time prognosticators transcribing paranoid fantasies about one-world government extermination plots that less than 10 years ago were the exclusive purview of Tim McVeigh and militant neo-nazis. This isnt just philosophical differences, this is epidemic mental illness.

There are conservatives on this board, I know most of them dont believe in this stuff. I find it impossible to believe Frac has lost his grip on reality the way many on the right have. 10 years ago he would have been in good company, more conservative views on how effective government initiatives can be, more hawkish on the deficit, more strict on immigration policy, but hey, we could have had a friendly and practical discussion about it. But something has seriously, seriously changed. I dont find conservatives piping up on this board in good company. I dont find them able to stand beside their party on grounded facts and cogent ideas. The people their party is supporting, Sharron Angle, Michele Bachman, Rand Paul, are crazy people. Michele Bachman actually thinks the government is positioning itself to exterminate the american people. Sharron Angle is openly advocating assassinating democrats if republicans dont win in November. These are the kind of thoughts for which people get locked in rubber rooms, and they are your party nominees for United States Congress.

And whats worse, is these people are barely outliers. Your party's nominee for Vice president and former Speaker of the House is right behind them. John Kyle and John McCain and Lindsay Graham are talking about overturning the 14th Amendment, going back to retroactively reinstate Dread Scott. You had people like Chuck Grassly telling his constituents that positions he voted for were a government plot to kill off old people. Like, I get it, you dont like Obama. But holy shit guys, please, for the love of all that is good in this country, come back to reality.

There are nuts on both sides. I'll fully concede that. But things are so much worse now than I can ever remember. And Im sorry, but the real problem is the right half of this county has abandoned its relationship to facts. Scribble knows republicans caused the meltdown, he knows tax cuts and deregulation have crippled this country, but rather than acknowledge that hes simply divorced himself from the world. Ive watched Fox News transform itself from a deliberately dishonest propaganda machine designed to make americans very, very, very afraid of muslims so that we would feel better about killing them, into a deliberately dishonest 24/7 willie horton infomercial designed to make white americans afraid of Barack Obama. The Van Jones story was fake. The Acorn story was fake. Shirly Sherrod and the new Black Panther Party stories were fake. They were not real. Their terrorizing on death panels was not real. Their rhetoric on deficits is NOT REAL. They are transcribing for america a fictional reality, totally disconnected from math and sources and all relationship to real events. Whats so shocking is seeing how effective it is. Fox News is an intellectual cancer upon this country, and people like John McCain, and Lindsay Graham, and Frac, who cannot find it in their moral fiber to stand for sanity, who are willing to vote for stark raving lunatics and remain silent are massively enabling one of the most shameful periods in this county's recent history.

Meh, I just read on a thread on some home improvement board that only freedom loving americans would use septic systems.

Sewer systems are a tool of a communist, Stalinist regime bent on poisoning your water since all sewer systems leak and dump effluent directly into surface water.

It also went on to talk about how your 'business' is your business and that you should be allowed to dump it on your lawn if you'd like.

And the government only wants people on sewage systems so it can tax them and steal their money to spend it on poor black people.

Lastly, the additives government puts in tap water also give people diabetes... so anyone who drinks tap water becomes dependent on government Medicare to manage their diabetes. This forces them to drive cars because diabetes makes it to difficult to walk or take public transportation.

So, you should also use well water otherwise the government will poison you.

jesus christ i don't nor have i ever believed barack obama was born anywhere but in the state of hawaii in 1961 which was without a doubt officially a u.s. state at that time which made him eligible to run for president for christ's sake.

and as for '... overturning the 14th Amendment, going back to retroactively reinstate Dread Scott.' you're being dishonest about amending that amendment, oe.

it's about clarifying the 14th amendment in part to deal with the current illegal immigration crisis:

www.politico.com - Graham eyes 'birthright citizenship'

“I may introduce a constitutional amendment that changes the rules if you have a child here,” Graham said during an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake ... We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen.”

this is how it is in almost all other countries - if you're not a legal citizen of the country then your kids who are born there are not automatically citizens of that country. i thought y'all wanted to be just like europe. why are you so outraged at this proposal?

oe, it troubles me that you (and .. keith olberman, rachel maddow?) would distort the issue to make it sound like republicans want a return to slavery.

oh oe and i see you're bringing up 'willie horton' so you're falling right in line with the spin that maxine waters' and charlie rangal's ethics investigations are just racist witch hunts targeting the congressional black caucus.

i want to write more but i'd just be mean and out of line so i'll stop now. happy 49th birthday, mr. president. see you next year!

i witnessed two douche nozzles pretty say that 1. because saudi's don't allow churches or synagogues, we should limit or control islamic places of worship - Newt Gingrinch. 2. i heard another asshole say, that islamic extremists and al qaeda sympathizers were celebrating the islamic cultural center in nyc - near wtc site. - Dan Senor [former Bush spokes idiot] here's a question for you Dan, let say the zoning commission kowtowed to your idiotic rantings, would not al qaeda use that as a means of rallying extremists to their cause, by suggesting The Great Satan has it out for Mulims?? you fucking retard.

Well, at least youre talking, I do appreciate the response.

The "jurisdiction thereof" line republicans are now strangely concerned with has always been interpreted to refer to foreign diplomats, and more worrisome at the time, the children of invading armies. Ordinary citizens of mexico are not an invading army, much as conservatives might wish to wiggle that idea into the american consciousness. Despite wave after wave after wave of immigrants from ireland and italy and poland and germany, the only times this section of the amendment has come into serious contention were during Dread Scott, when depriving citizenship to native americans, when the supreme court struck down the Chinese Exclusion Act, and now. Im sorry, but I find that telling.

You need 3/4 of the house and senate to amend the constitution. I know conservatives are feeling bullish, but I dont think Lindsay Graham actually believes youre ever going to get 3/4 of congress to agree to something like this. So what is the purpose of holding hearings? Or even talking about it? Why waste time on nonsense like this?

Again, Im sorry, but there is only one reason. To make political theater to drive racial antagonism that republicans think will politically advantage them in November.

And no, I dont think Charlie Rangel or Maxine Waters should get either undo prosecution nor protection because of their race. I think Rangel is probably corrupt as hell, and everyone is better without him there. My concern isnt these individual incidents, which, taken by themselves, are all perfectly newsworthy. My concern is that taken together, this is an unambiguous trend on that station. These stories all seem to be filtered for a very selective purpose. At some point, story after story, night after night, immigration, acorn, Shirly Sherrod, the black panthers, the downtown mahattan mosque, winking and nodding and comparing obama to hitler, youve got to ask yourself, does the right care about anything except minority vilification? I mean they throw a frog out now and then about the deficit when they feel like blocking unemployment benefits, but as soon as you ask them about tax cuts or social security cuts or military cuts they run for the hills. Theyre either cowards, or hypocrites, or theyre just hoping to pull the wool over your eyes and couldnt give a shit either way. So what is left? What is their strategy? I have to say, when all your fights are centered around minorities and the 14th amendment and challenges to "states rights" and "second amendment remedies", I'll tell you what the hell the strategy looks like. It looks like they know the voting population this fall is likely to be older and whiter, and theyre trying to scare them to raise money and win votes.

Im ranting at you, but its because that really, really bothers me. It bothers me people in the 21st century are willing to do that to politically advantage themselves. It bothers me that the largest news organization in the country is deceiving people and scaring them to make money. I find it unconscionable. I singled you out specifically because youre not crazy. I just wish more people like you if you dont agree with those methods would put the country first and raise their voices against people like that.

I blame internet for escalation of crazy in the last decade. For all the promises of quicker access to information and unlimited communication, you also have the rise of voices that were traditionally unheard before.

Mental illness? Rare manifestation of a mental illness? No worry! Just log in! You will find hundreds of like minded souls that will confirm you are that rare sane person in a sea of crazy. (prime example: archinect.com)

Information out there proving you wrong is just a hurdle to seeking out the confirmation of your beliefs. Hey, most topics worth discussing are too complex in scope. Use your gut feeling instead!

A two party system's prime goal is to achieve 51% approval of willing voters, respectfully. A lot of money is spent on attracting the fringe to achieve that 51% goal (anything above that number is not worth it: a win is a win).

What you end with up is a clusterfuck of non related issues disguised as a cohesive ideology. Pro gun? Pro life? Pro gold standard? Anti environment? Anti government? Anti socialist muslem overlord? Join in! As long as you sing the approved song of loyalty, we promise you will never feel alone again (use your own list to paint the left in the same light).

The outcome manifests itself in the most bizarre scenarios: You have low middle class cheering for high income tax cuts. You have hunters cheering for destruction of environment. You have the self-proclaimed intellectuals begging for withdrawal from Afghanistan (that war was the valid one), etc...

The ultimate result (of rise of the craziest voices) is that traditionally insane political issues get pushed into the relevant middle. We are in the middle of the most inane political discourse in the history of this country.

The original poster of this thread is an apt example of this phenomenon. Passive aggressive. Mentally and physically surrounded by approving voices. Angry, yet not sure why. Incapable of providing proactive input. Fully aware that screams drown out polite conversation. Yet lonely and wishing for feedback of any kind, he/she finally has an audience!

Hey you! Yes you. Did you make it this far in my post? Chances are you just lost a few braincells reading this. Stay away from political discussions from now on. There's nothing to gain here. The ship has hit the iceberg. You are welcome to blame me for everything while I look for a floating device.

AT beta - that's my point, that lefties/liberals/democrats/pro(re)gressives tell us all the time how europe does this so we should as well ('free' health care, banning capital punishment, etc.).

so why are democrats (in particular) so outraged at amending the 14th amendment to mirror what 99% of all countries do?

and why are democrats spinning this as republicans wanting to remove the citizenship of black people with statements like '...to retroactively reinstate Dread Scott.'?

I heard this unreal stupidity on the news the other day about how the 14th amendment needed changing because al qaeda was going to send over sleeper cells of pregnant moms that would raise them as secret terrorists right in our midst.

Now... i understand the concept that eliminating the birth right citizenship could reduce illegal immigration by getting rid of the incentive for pregnant mothers to cross the boarder in order to improve the life long opportunities of their children. Perhaps thats even a reasonable argument (though i feel like such a measure is short sighted and doesn't address the REAL incentive for crossing the border illegally).
So... here we are... a realistic and rational argument FOR amending the 14th constitution. But i haven't seen that argument made anywhere yet. Just the ridiculous fear mongering about home grown terrorists... why is that?

AT |letdown| - what the hell are you talking about? as thom yorke once said you have not been payin' attention!

please re-read (if read it if you didn't already) the politico article i linked above regarding lindsey graham introducing the amendment. here's what he said:

But with 12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S., Graham said it may be time to restrict the ability of immigrants to have children who become citizens just because they are born in the country.

“I may introduce a constitutional amendment that changes the rules if you have a child here,” Graham said during an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren. “Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake ... We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen.

Asked how intent Graham is on introducing the amendment, the South Carolina Republican responded: “I got to.”

“People come here to have babies,” he said. “They come here to drop a child. It's called "drop and leave." To have a child in America, they cross the border, they go to the emergency room, have a child, and that child's automatically an American citizen. That shouldn't be the case. That attracts people here for all the wrong reasons.

I've just gotta say it, Displaced.

That article is tripe. Intestines. Bad bilious stuff.

Every president and first lady vacations. Bush spent half his presidency on vacations, but since he could only find Texas on a map, that's where he went.

The article suggests that the First Lady was wasting taxpayer dollars by going on a political trip with her husband to Denmark. Let me just say to the author of the article, "fuck you." This is what heads of state do: they go on trips. They represent their country. Sometimes in actual other countries.

By the way, oe's first long post above? The one that starts "Look. This thread is crazy...?" Brilliant.

Oe hit it on the head. The lunatics are trying to redefine normal. They're trying to get control of the asylum by defining sane, rational people as "socialist." Michelle Bachmann, Rand Paul and Glenn Beck are not only crazy, they are scary, because they're convinced that somehow they're rational.

Rand Paul: congenital liar and exaggerator who thinks the 18th century was better than the present.
Michelle Bachmann: closet violent insurrectionist with plasticine smile
Glenn Beck: Mussolini-esque radio host who thinks he is more intelligent than he actually is. Actually less intelligent than mildew.

I don't know unicorn, looks like it needs more work, i'm not a toothbrush expert, but it doesn't look right. It looks very uncomfortable, you got to remember that its not a building, you cant force people to buy this product. Those bristles look too firm which can damage your gums and damage tooth enamel, handles a little too short too, other than that I agree now the oversized head will be perfect for Zaha Hadid's big mouth.

ps. thanks for adding to the 50 million pounds of discarded plastic toothbrushes. I do like the color though.
