I´m interested in all Pyramidbuildings- or lookalike Pyramids that have been established or projected worldwide since the 18th century.
Apparently, there haven´t been Pyramids built or projected for about 4000 years since the ancient Egypt ones until the 18th century, when Boulleé and Ledoux came up with their designs for huge pryramidal cenotaphs.
After that, the Interest in Pyramids dropped a bit, until their renaissance in postmodern times as a form.
But Today there seems to be a big Pyramid Boom all over the world. And the big Names are involved. Foster did a Pyramid in Astana (Kasakhztan), Herzog & deMeuron are projecting about three pyramid lookalikes in Paris, London and Jura (Switzerland), Koolhaas has joined the "Great Pyramid" project in Germany and so on.
So, why is it? Is there a desire for immortality or the for new religious forms/beliefs in society?
When Charles Jencks talks about "Iconic Buildings" and Mark Wigley says "Reconstruction is the Ideologie of our Time", maybe contemporary Pyramids are the ultimate retroactive Iconic Buildings?
My Investigation so far and a list of all contemporary Pyramids I´m trying to establish are documented at:
Obviously the list is not completed at all (maybe never will)- for example I didn´t list the Visions of Boulée and Ledoux yet and there have to be much more Pyramids in the USA especially from the 60s or 70s I suppose.
So, who knows more Pyramids that aren´t on the List, please tell me. If you know the year of construction, have detailed Information or even licensefree Fotos would be very nice.
Nice fledgling website, bonk (did you know Richard Scarry's books have a character named Bonk? He's an ill-mannered boy pig. I use "bonk" whenever I accidentally hit something/one, like "Sorry, did I just bonk your head with my laptop bag?").
He did a house in Desert Highland, Scottsdale Arizona. I recall cruising by it a few times when I was working a project in that gated community. It was published as I recall. I also made more than one trip to the Tempe City Hall....butt ugly building.
@agfa8x: I´m writing on my Masterthesis (M.Arch) and it deals somehow with this Pyramidthing..
@liberty bell: cmon, it´s just a blooger site. so don´t be too critical. I heard about that Bosnian Pyramid, but that seems to be much too old for my research. The one in Tempe is on my list already. Thanks!
@vado retro: thanks for the hint!
@led signal light: Thanks for that one. Wasn´t on the list yet.
@dread beat an´blood: On the list. But thanks!
@treekiller: I´ll determine that one more precise. Thanks!
@liberty bell: ok, ok, got it. Just thought "fledgling" refered to the quite simple design (what I would understand, because it is kind of fledgling).
Never mind.
Luxor is on the list (1991-93, Luxor Hotel, Las Vegas, USA, Hotel). Nice one, btw.
kungapa, come on. that is just ridiculous. why would they invent an unfinished hotel for propaganda purposes? i've heard that they photoshop it out of images of the skyline to avoid the embarrassment.
either this is the best photoshop/premiere work i've ever seen, or there is another giant pyramidal hotel somewhere in the world that's standing in for this one. yes, that must be the only logical explanation.
@fays.panda: Maybe you´re right. But good or bad, ugly or beautiful architecture is in the eye of the Beholder. And these terms are not the topic for me. It´s just about the Phenomenon of nowadays Pyramids (why they exist, etc.) and a Documentation of all Pyramids since the 18th Century.

@Orhan Ayyüce: Wow, what a nice collection! At the first sight I just recognized the Ziggurat Projekt /Dubai. Do you know more about all the others? Please give me some Details! Thanks for the Moment
@fays.panda: You didn´t sound arrogant. Everything is fine!
Contemporary Pyramids?
Hi !
I´m interested in all Pyramidbuildings- or lookalike Pyramids that have been established or projected worldwide since the 18th century.

Best,
Bonk
learn the trade
bonk, are you studying architecture, in a related field, or an enthusiastic amateur?
Nice fledgling website, bonk (did you know Richard Scarry's books have a character named Bonk? He's an ill-mannered boy pig. I use "bonk" whenever I accidentally hit something/one, like "Sorry, did I just bonk your head with my laptop bag?").
You must have heard of the controversial Bosnian pyramid complex of the sun?
Also, that one in Tempe, Az is an upside down pyramid, right? I think I paid a traffic ticket there once.
predock was doing some pyramids back in the 80s
Since it is structurally more stable, it is easier to get a building permit.
My two cents.
Didn't Uncle Scrooge discover this pyramid because the tip of it punctured his butt?
pyramid arena, memphis, tn
pyramid at the louvre, paris, france
He did a house in Desert Highland, Scottsdale Arizona. I recall cruising by it a few times when I was working a project in that gated community. It was published as I recall. I also made more than one trip to the Tempe City Hall....butt ugly building.
wilt chamberlain slept on a 10' diameter round be with a bedspread made from the nose fur of wolfs in this 'pyramid' .
also see the for sale listing from a few years back
very lautneresque...
le perthus pyramid, bofill, 1977
oh come on...the nose fur of wolves....the nose fur of wolves?!?

@:crizzler: Was ist dein Problem?

@dammson: Very nice. Thank you!
@liberty bell: I loved those Richard Scarry Books as a Kid. But "my" Bonk refers to another context..
I didn't intend to sound critical at all, I said "fledgling" because it's new...right? Or do I not know what that word means?
Anyway, no criticism intended.
Also, did I miss it, or is Vegas not on the list? Luxor Casino, I think it's ccalled.
@liberty bell: ok, ok, got it. Just thought "fledgling" refered to the quite simple design (what I would understand, because it is kind of fledgling).
Never mind.
Luxor is on the list (1991-93, Luxor Hotel, Las Vegas, USA, Hotel). Nice one, btw.
d'oh! i should've seen them on your list.
bonk, as in "bonk's adventure" bonk?
while not a true pyramid, i think you may have missed this little gem.
ryugyong hotel, north korea
My north-korean friend tells me that building is photoshopped into images as western propaganda. In reality it doesn't exist.
kungapa, doesn't it show up in Google Earth too?
Bull. Google is in the tank for the western military-industrial complex.
kungapa, come on. that is just ridiculous. why would they invent an unfinished hotel for propaganda purposes? i've heard that they photoshop it out of images of the skyline to avoid the embarrassment.
either this is the best photoshop/premiere work i've ever seen, or there is another giant pyramidal hotel somewhere in the world that's standing in for this one. yes, that must be the only logical explanation.
I'm kidding. It was a spoof on the fact that the north koreans photoshop it out of pictures and generally try and pretend that it doesn't exist.
ah, ok, ha ha, i hoped you were kidding.
supposedly it will be done in time for kim sung il's 100th birthday celebration.
With emphasis on "supposedly".
You fooled me, kungapa!
Though you're right that if it was a Western conspiracy of course Google Earth would modify their images to comply.
