oh, and by the by, know one said that top posts would go to "new faces" in fact Obama seems to be following the model of Lincoln, and including many people he fought in order to bring a wealth of different voices.
Seems like a decent idea. I don't care much for Hillary personally, but nobody denies that she's smart as hell and commands a lot of respect around the world... And I'll admit she's done a lot to redeem herself during the general election. On a purely political level, Obama is right to throw her a nice bone.
As an added bonus, having her as Secretary of State would get her out of the Senate and put her into a clearly subservient position to Obama, where she would be unable to cobble together a political alliance against him. Potentially brilliant move on Obama's part: Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
Hillary wouldn't be terrible. I would really like someone to go in and end this 50-year old Israel-Palestine conflict once and for goddamn all.
Thus far every secretary of state we have had in the US has just been a part of the problem. So you can imagine my low expectations...even for Hillary to asume that role.
She wouldn't be a bad pick.
Lot's of experience and seems to be mostly on same page as Obama in terms of policy/approach.
Plus it would be a good way to "appease" Clintonista holdouts.
As for the "so much for new faces" comment
My though was always that he was promising a new direction more than just new faces. Direction and approach comes from the top (Obama) so i am not so concerned with who he has working for him. Personally i would prefer people with some knowledge and experience.
plus as Beta pointe dout, his current Cabinet and White House staff building approach seems to have precedent and merit.
as a so-called "clintonista" (this phrase in itself smacks of a little sexism) who voted for obama, reading this thread has been the first time since the election i've felt a pang of regret.
have we now reached the point where jokes are off limits?
i think Hillary did a masterful job of working for Obama's candidacy. i think she'd make a terrific Sec. of State. Hillary's having seen the best and the worst of the world, will only make her better situated to carry the message of America.

beta, this is so completely disingenuous after some of the things you posted during the campaign i really don't know what to say.
and i'm not going to give a complete derivation of the -ista suffix and its spanish origins or connotations when applied towards women, but you're again being completely disingenuous not to acknowledge the pejorative use of the term.
but we've been through this before, and i'm done arguing with you.
Funny how your link with the expanded information still mentions nothing about it being a pejorative term for women.
But I'm glad we got such an important issue cleared up... I wouldn't want to think that nursing a petty grudge over losing the primary is getting in the way of rebuilding the economy and restoring our relations with the world.
um...i think our bigger problem is that america is now run by a socialist who happens to have ties to middle-western terroirists. at least clintons don't take money from rich people. how long before we're all in breadlines & bomb shelters?
jesus christ, do i have to write a freaking dissertation on this? there are two things going on here. one is english versus "ethnic" (i.e. south/central american). the english suffix -ist is the non-pejorative and simply means a proponent or follower of a particular idea, person, or group. the -ista suffix really first came into english usage with the sandinistas, an extreme left-wing nicaraguan rebel group, and has since contained the pejorative notion associated with extremism.
second, as awareness of the spanish language grew in the u.s. with an influx of central and south american immigrants, the -a suffix became more and more associated with women than men. take for example, the word "fashionista," probably the most common useage of the suffix today.
I wouldn't want to think that nursing a petty grudge over losing the primary is getting in the way of rebuilding the economy and restoring our relations with the world.
oh yeah, cuz i'm sure the great minds here at archinect are going to tackle those issues next.
you're a turdista, and your support for President Elect Obama was always, how should I say, specious. in your use of fashionista, you have not proven anything. if i recall it was you going around calling people Obamatons, just as we were calling Clinton supporters Clintonistas. btw, do you have any proof that only men supported Obama, and only women supported HRC?
and all you should care about my support for president-elect obama is that he received my vote which he did. i admire his idealism and think that he has brought a much-needed sense of optimism to this country. where i still remain skeptical is his ability to guide and enact concrete meaningful legislation. it's his leadership abilities that i doubt. but he has four years to prove himself and for the sake of this country, i hope he proves my doubts wrong.
this turdista will now retire and let all you obamatrons debate the merits of hillary rodham clinton, secretary of state.
you know what, i thought we buried this shit a while ago, i question your OBVIOUS knee-jerk reaction to describe vapid Clinton supporters - many of which were men - and you try to use your poor etymological skills to attach a lame, bullshit sexist argument where none existed or could even be rationally inferred. you remind me of that crazy women on Fox News that tried to claim she was a HRC supporter that was now turned on by McCain.
haha...this thread is just further proof that democrats are a bunch of girly-boy whiners...stop hurting hilary's feelings...no, you didn't...yes you did...you're the matron...i'm the matron-master...more like thr FATon-msater do you guys slap each other too? or is it more like a tickle-fest? ha ha ah...
of course i'm drinking...it wouldn't feel like a proper thrusday if i wasn't.
and for what it's worth, i think charlie wies shoud be running the country...except his got a more important job...like running notre dame football! go irish!!!!
And that comment mainly refers to the back and forth between jafidler and betadineligatures (both of whose elementary-school wrath I'm sure I'll experience now that I've posted this.)
Huffington Post is reporting that Obama offered the SoS position to Hillary during their meeting in Chicago yesterday, and that she has requested some time to consider the offer.
the extreme left wing of the sandinistas may have needed to be so if they didn't have to fight against the fascism of samoza and the extreme right wing terrorism of the contras.
Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State ?
Anybody ? Why ? Why not ?
Something about it doesn't sit well with me. . .
Hagel ? Kerry ? Richardson ?
Powell ?
so much for new faces in washington, huh?
Yeah. Well, major cabinet posts could be expected to go to those with at least Senatorial, if not White House, experience, no ?
bill would like that, no ?
i am not entirely against this, because i trust women are more experienced in the ability to emasculate men.
i kid, i kid...

i thought the idea of obama appointing her to supreme court is even better...she be stuck there indefinitely & would have to keep relatively quiet

just say NO to neoliberalism
as a so-called "clintonista" (this phrase in itself smacks of a little sexism) who voted for obama, reading this thread has been the first time since the election i've felt a pang of regret.
smacks of sexism? how?
have we now reached the point where jokes are off limits?

The Portugese affix -ista (as in Sandinista or barista) has a different meaning than the Spanish diminutive -ita (as in Seniorita).
it's a bit more nuanced than the 30 second wiktionary entry.
this gets into its origins a bit further.
oh no, not another Hillary thread....
SHE'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!
and, btw, jaf, I defended Hillary plenty here, and sexism was rampant during the election, but now you're just picking nits on the "ista" thing.
Funny how your link with the expanded information still mentions nothing about it being a pejorative term for women.

if she takes this job she'll never be presidente.

puddles i think you should preemptively hide in that shelter now it might do you some good.

besides, i don't think you voted Obama anywho.
that's obamatrons to you, sir.

puddles, you right-wing nut job, have you been drinking again?
use enemy images and static labeling to you own avail.
and you will find yourself more hurt than those you try to slander, you know like the rubber and glue or like projection.

a reasonable person could deduct something here
should we tell puddles it's friday? jimmy clausen needs a haircut
This thread has devolved into complete idiocy.

nah.
Oy. What hath SDR wrought ?
Lots of interesting questions floating in the air these days. Can't we all just get. . .you-know-what ?
Back to the topic at hand:
Huffington Post is reporting that Obama offered the SoS position to Hillary during their meeting in Chicago yesterday, and that she has requested some time to consider the offer.
In that case who would take her place in Senate? what is NY law?
gov patterson would appoint someone, he's on cnn talking about it now...or i should wolf is trying to get him to talk about it, but he's not biting
i don't know about him is he more or less progressive and or neoliberal than HRC?
Patterson is apparently a product of the Harlem Democratic machine, and is fairly progressive. Not sure how he compares to HRC, though.
oh ya that's the Blind guy
he is cool
have any secretaries of state ever become president?
would joining the cab't be a good career move for hillary if she want's the white house in 2016?
how old will she be in 2016?
she'll be 70 then, so if the so-called "sexists" here have a problem with a woman, they'll have even more of problem with their grandma running.
the idea of a baby-boomer winning another presidential election is over, the ship has sailed. it's 1960's and above for the foreseeable future.
the extreme left wing of the sandinistas may have needed to be so if they didn't have to fight against the fascism of samoza and the extreme right wing terrorism of the contras.
ya the next prez will be generation X and of color and not from the 2 major parties.
