We've had a few project referrals lately--some very small, some fairly substantial.
Mostly coming from Architects and Contractors, but also local committee members, friends, etc. We are Landscape Architects.
I am wondering if there is some convention out there for showing appreciation for referrals?
I'm thinking something along the lines of a small gift or token of appreciation such as a gift card and note?? Fees range anywhere from around $1500--$15k. Small projects, but just right for us at this stage.
A sincere 'thank you' is good for everyone, and referrals in kind to the pros. Something small and personal is good for either - hootch, theater tickets, or better yet why not offer to plant them something nice?
Miles' suggestions are good, classier than what I did, I paid 1% of fee in cash and let people know I did... kept them coming... might use that percentage to decide on what size of tree you plant. Know dentists get paid for referrals from specialist....as George Costanza says "You can put your 'thank you' in a sack":)
Maybe a thank you note at the outset with crafted words indicating that if things run to fruition they will be a part of the celebration..... usually paid once I got ink.... considering marketing cost today 1% is cheap.
Appropriate 'Thank You' for Referrals?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you wait until you actually 'get' the project? Seems to me timing is important..
