The Schatz-Ornstein residence is a 3,700-square-foot two- bedroom home with an indoor swimming pool. It is located on a hillside outside of town and faces south towards Mount Tamalpais. The plan gives each of the rooms a south view to the mountain, and a continuous south-facing porch with a metal brise-soleil which modifies the sunlight. The pool room is passively cooled and heated and has back-up mechanical systems for heating, cooling, and dehumidification. As an extension of the owner's career interests as an opthomological surgeon and photographer, the house is an exploration of the poetics of daylight.
