Studio One Eleven is an integrated practice of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design that celebrates the vibrancy of urban life while embracing its inherent messiness. Our design philosophy encourages the organic growth of communities, celebrates street life, and makes space for the unexpected, ensuring that our designs resonate with the soul of a place.
Our work is defined by several themes of transformation for 21st century cities including housing for all, building community, enhancing mobility, renewing the public realm and fostering sustainable, equitable places. Regardless of scale or typology, our projects demonstrate our commitment to enhance the human experience and inspire moments of joy in urban life.
We champion better multifamily housing in Southern California, with a focus on design for livable urbanism, affordable housing and sustainable communities. Through innovative approaches like adaptive reuse projects, we breathe new life into existing structures, honoring their historical significance while minimizing environmental impact. Pioneering initiatives like net zero multifamily housing underscore our commitment to reducing embodied carbon through cutting-edge construction methods. We work with city and agency partners as well as community stakeholders to envision the equitable transformation of places. We plan, design and help activate vibrant public spaces of all scales that celebrate street life, integrate multimodal mobility, and prioritize the needs and aspirations of the communities we serve.
Our studio space is an urban lab that reflects our design philosophy and community values. In 2017, we relocated from a high-rise to a former big box store in an economically depressed area of Downtown Long Beach, in a bid to be better connected to the street and local community. This bold move sparked significant additional investments in the area, ultimately revitalizing a neglected part of downtown and attracting a diverse array of local businesses. Our office now serves as a dynamic hub for ideation, exchange, and community building, with initiatives like artist-in-residence programs, sharing our community room to local nonprofits and inviting other creatives to share our space and collaborate on urban challenges. We also spearhead the vision of the Downtown Long Beach Design District, curating community-based events, activations, and arts-based programming.
Our practice fosters a culture of inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability. We pledge support to initiatives like the 2030 AIA Commitment, SoCal NOMA Challenge, and 1+AIA to offer pro-bono services to nonprofits. With over half of our team being multi-racial/non-white and 48% female, we are committed to fair representation and pay equity. Our work place culture promotes collaboration and team-building opportunities such as Monthly Rumbles and Thirsty Thursdays. We host design-related events like guest lectures, screenings, and festivals. Additionally, we offer flexible hours, remote and hybrid options, and restorative classes like yoga, breathwork, and art workshops to support physical, mental, and creative well-being in our Well Gold/LEED Platinum Certified space.
Studio One Eleven's workplace and projects embody the transformative potential of architecture to positively impact urban communities. Through our work, we aim to inspire others to envision and champion a more equitable and vibrant future for our cities.
