I have a sincere love for interior finishes and I’ve aspired to become an architect since I was fourteen years old. Six years ago I came to a large-scale A&E firm looking to improve my technical skill sets after interning at a smaller firm. As an intern architect, I focused on developing construction documents, coordinating agency review, and performing construction administration for retail clients. When I left the firm just one year after receiving my B-Arch, I was managing two national retail clients and multiple concurrent projects with very little supervision. Looking for greater challenges and more learning opportunities l moved to HDR, and working on healthcare remodels for 20-50 year old facilities has been an incredible learning experience. I was asked to take on the Project Architect responsibilities for a four-story hospital addition roughly six months into construction. As that hospital addition comes closer to substantial completion, I know that I’ve gained a far better understanding of constructability and technical detailing.
I believe great designers truly understand how things are built, and I look forward to returning to a more design-focused career as my next step.
