Layer City Barcelona is a master plan and development plan for the Can Battlo industrial site in Southern Barcelona. The site, a former textile factory has been in disuse for a half century and serves as an obstacle and "eye-sore" for the surrounding community (so much so that the facade has been covered in advertisements)
Layer City Barcelona, unlike the current development plan, acknowledges the rich historical significance of the textile industry and industrialism in the shaping of the current city. The development plans a school, art exhibition hall, residences, small commercial and office space around the existing infrastructure and existing buildings. It engages the old buildings with a grand plaza, converting the old factory building into a new art exhibition, school and studio space for to carry on the sites influence on Barcelona's native culture i.e Catalonian fabrics.
The housing development is divided into public and private sectors giving residents a public view to the new city and a more private green space for personal activities. In this and many ways Layer City adds complexity and richness to an already rich culture and city fabric that is being built over in attempts to simplify building programing as well as "icon" creation.
