Empowering Iraqi Crafts - Iraq Pavilion

Expo 2020 in Dubai is divided into three sectors: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. The Iraq pavilion is in the opportunity sector where opportunity is expressed through Al Saliya - A traditional fishing net and a symbol of wealth, wisdom and goodness in Mesopotamian culture.

Al Saliya structure shades the Iraq Pavilion while the Iraq pavilion showcases Iraq's history as well as Iraq's future opportunities from North to South of Iraq through Iraq's two rivers- The Tigris and the Euphrates.

The woven baskets made from palm leaves fill the mesh allowing natural light into the pavilion through the openings while providing shade. It also allows the natural movement of air taking advantage of the prevailing winds. This approach embraces passive cooling strategies resulting in electrical energy savings promoting a sustainable approach.

As for the colors of the baskets, they are taken from the map that illustrates Iraq's future potential in photovoltaics symbolizing future opportunities in the use of solar energy. Palm trees are of special importance for Iraqis, as they are a symbol of prosperity, continuity and growth. Serving as the source of food, livelihood, growth and building material, the palm trees are considered to be pre-eminently blessed in the heavenly books. The design intends to use the foliage of the palm tree to make baskets that perch on the structural frame. The palm leaves that make up the baskets are divided into two parts, the petioles and the leflets. The palm leaf baskets used in the pavilion are woven by Iraqi men and women.

These baskets represent an important part of the Iraqi cultural heritage. Hence, becomes instrumental in the design by using traditional materials and methods for its making to support local crafts.
