Piazza del Carmine

Situated in Piazza del Carmine in Milan, this project for Generali Properties was a building renovation and conservation of a historical center.
Subject to historical and area restrictions, it is part of the cloister of Santa Maria del Carmine, which was renovated in the 1970’s by Belgioioso.
The project itself consisted of recovering the previously unusable attic spaces and refurbishing common areas. By repurposing the existing attic spaces, seven new apartments were created, all with terraces with views of Milan’s skyline.
Our goal was to carry out a non-invasive intervention, in order to reappraise the existing architectural value of the place with a very “light” language.
Regarding the ground floor open spaces, the project hasn’t changed the serene atmosphere of the place: the entrance gallery with access from the via Madonnina, the first court intended to be not only a passageway but a place of rest, and the cloister, integrated by the colour scheme with the church and refurbished with new planting areas. The creation of a new illumination system has emphasized the vaults and the few frescos which have been conserved.
