C-RE-AID SHELTERING FAMILIES IN RURAL TANZANIA

The transition from living a nomadic lifestyle, to establishing a permanent settlement, has been an enduring process of change - One which has involved researching locally available materials, in relation to the climatic conditions affecting the region in question. In C-re-aid we explore the potentials of architecture and design in order to fight poverty and combat climate change.

As we continue with our journey of developing alternative building techniques and inspire communities to provide an ecological building culture; ln 2017 we collaborated with international and local Interns, local leaders and local craftsmen to build a house for underprivileged family in Shimbwe.

The village of Shimbwe is located in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The poorest demographic of this community continue to struggle with ineffective and unsafe housing, as well and inadequate sanitation facilities.

The project offered a solution which combines culture, climate and ecology. We resourced the local stones and other materials within the region as well as improving the culture of building using Rammed Earth Technique. Both construction materials have a big thermal mass maintaining the indoor temperature.  To reduce the thermal loss through the iron corrugated sheets we insulated the roof with dried banana leafs gathered in the used cement bags.

We brought new values, hopes and respect to the lives of a family. C-re-aid Organization hopes to explore further practical ways to implement affordable housing that can be manufactured locally for low-income families.
