I graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation
for my Master of Science in Architecture in the AAD program. The AAD program at GSAPP is quite unique in its intense conceptual and theoretical approach to design. The topic of my studio this year covered issues from art analysis, museum experience, digital interactive lifestyle and smart rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy from a conceptual abstract art design to detail structure interconnections, using rhino, grasshopper, Revit, WSA structure simulation and all kinds of software. They were posed and reasoned in a conceptual theoretical way, then being tested by a practical proposal. I have very strong graphic skills, creative thinking and knowledge about construction as well. My projects were selected to the GSAPP Abstract publication, which proves I’m not only qualified as a designer, but also an intellectual researcher.
My undergraduate works were mainly about the exploration of material, structure, spatial experience
and cultural influence. We did a lot physical models with all kinds of materials to test the design possibilities. The conventional detailed thinking back then was combined with the open critical thinking at Columbia University and being brought into a more integrated level. I have experience in working both in the U.S. and China. When I was interning in one of the best small firm in China on my last year in college, I had my job well done and independently finished the concept design of the planning of a commercial district. I interned in New York last winter for the MOMA PS1 Warm-up Proposal. Though we did not win in the end, I learned a lot about interactive design, materials and model making. Now I am very used to thinking under multiple social conditions, cultural differentiation and various ways of problem solving and team working. The various experience of mine provided me with an open mind, strong spirit, independent and cooperative working abilities at the same time.
