Saint Nicholas Houses consists of thirteen, 14-story buildings with 1524 apartments. Completed September 30, 1954. Majority of properties of the public housing were in terrible condition on the verge of collapsing while some of the buildings such as the brownstones, are in excellent shape. Faced with the outrage over slum clearance and the loss of so many wonderful if substandard buildings, through typology correction, I come up with a methodical system in the urban context, which means free the isolated area in East Harlem, protect the precious brownstones typology, encourage the mixture of the uses, including bars, theaters, restuarants, incorporating and ingesting the city, even creating a city within a building.
