Columbia Beach Resort, Pissouri
Monasteries are the largest traditional structures to be built in rural Cyprus during the last 200 years and this building type with the main church in the centre surrounded by cloisters, cells and service buildings became the starting point for this design. The long narrow site provoked a main building with all the public areas to the north overlooking a lagoon pool flanked by individual villas that accommodate the 125 rooms. The small village square by the sea, ideal for outdoor functions, is created by the juxtaposition of the small church, the taverna and bar. Local materials were used extensively in order to visually blend the buildings with the surroundings. The outdoor/indoor 90m long pool is divided by large custom made stainless steel doors which open according to the weather conditions.
