TIGERTAIL

The 3,200 sq ft residence is located in the Crestwood Hills neighborhood of Brentwood, California, a post war development of modest mid-century homes. The project consists of the rebuilding of an existing building with a new second story wing. The new architecture compliments the existing residence and builds upon the original intentions of Qunicy Jones and the other pioneers of this progressive neighborhood.

The architecture is a direct result of the various conditions inherent within the site. The peculiar geometry of the second story volume is a result of the existing site conditions and the current building setback regulations. Openings to the views and the need for solid walls for shear and privacy were also factors that defined the building envelope.

The building is low and unassuming at the street and in keeping with the scale of the neighboring homes. The residence opens to the courtyard with walls of glass. A series of bent, steel moment frames straddle the existing one story structure and are expressed in the new architecture. The folded planes of the walls and roof are an extension of the rolling topography of the hillside site. The folded planes are sheathed with interlocking metal panels. The interior is clad with wood, blurring the distinction between wall, ceiling and floor. Views are framed as the building projects outward to the city, the ocean and the neighboring Getty Center in the distance.
