North Beach is a new sea-side park for the city of Santa Monica. Located on an acre parcel at the base of the bluff located between the Pacific Coast Highway to the North and the sandy Santa Monica State Beach to the south.Natural landforms allow for various experiences within the park. The elevated earthworks are inspired by the sea, the undulating landscape is reminiscent of the forgotten sand dunes that once occupied the site.
The universally accessible designed park is both fun and educational for children and adults of all abilities. Traditional barriers are removed that may hold back children with physical, cognitive, vision or hearing disabilities from the rest of the group. The playground areas are highlighted by barrier-free equipment. These structures allow for increased maneuvering space and are complimented by accessible surfaces and paths.Areas are designated for younger children (2-5), older children (6-12) and adults. A sensory garden provides opportunities and equipment for kids to learn through touch and imaginative play.
Through materiality and form, unique experiences are achieved. The undulating landforms provide elevated paths that protect the two distinct play zones. A series of shade structures are strategically situated within the park to provide shelter, shade, and shadow. The steel framed canopies are designed with minimal impact on the landscape as prescribed by the California Coastal Commission. The lightweight structures offer optimal transparency while providing the necessary protection from the harsh California sun. The follies serve as a destination within the park while at the same time frame the extraordinary views of the surrounding Santa Monica mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
